Other Series and Editions
by John P. DuLong, Ph.D.

Like many other valuable genealogical works, the Europäische
Stammtafeln is the result of a long collaborative project involving
several authors. There are three distinct series of this reference
work. Unless otherwise indicated, on this web page, when I mention
the Europäische Stammtafeln I am referring to the third series
(Schwennicke 1978-1995).
Although it is better to use the newest series, in some
cases you may wish to refer to an older series. This well be the
case if it is the only thing available to you or if it is one of the
few families covered in a previous series not yet covered in the new
series. Just keep in mind the age of the material and that there
might already be known errors with the data.
First Series:
According to Bodine (1997a), Isenburg came out with the
first two volumes as:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz zu. Die Ahnen der
Deutschen Kaiser, Könige, und ihrer Gemahlinnen [Ancestor Tables
of the German Emperors, Kings, and Their Wives], 1931, and Ahnentafeln
der Regenten Europas und ihrer Gemahlinnen [Ancestor Tables of
the Rulers of Europe and Their Wives], 1938.
However, the first full citation I can find for this old
series is:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz zu. Stammtafeln
zur Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten [Family Trees for the
History of the European States ]. 2 vols. Berlin: Verlag
J. A. Stargardt, 1936. With an index published as a supplement
in 1937.
Vol. 1: Stammtafeln zur Geschichte der deutschen
staaten [Family Trees for the History of the German States].
Vol. 2: Stammtafeln zur Geschichte der außerdeutschen Staaten
[Family Trees for the History of the Non-German States] .
This series was apparently edited and reprinted in a second
edition as:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz zu. Stammtafeln zur
Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten [Family Trees for the History
of European States]. 2 vols. 2nd ed. Marburg, Germany:
J.A. Stargardt Verlag, 1965.
A third edition of this series came out as:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz zu. Stammtafeln zur
Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten [Family Trees for the History
of European States]. Ed. by F. Baron Freytag von Loringhoven.
2 vols. Rev. ed. Marburg, Germany: J.A. Stargardt Verlag,
1975.
Second Series:
The first edition of the second series under the complete
control of Loringhoven was:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz von. Stammtafeln
zur Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten [Family Trees for the
History of European States] (Europäische Stammtafeln).
Edited by Frank, Baron, Freytag von Loringhoven. 4 vols.
Marburg, Germany: J. A. Stargardt, 1956-1958.
There was a second edition of this middle series as well:
Isenburg, Wilhelm Karl, Prinz von. Stammtafeln
zur Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten [Family Trees for the
History of European States] (Europäische Stammtafeln).
Edited by Frank, Baron, Freytag von Loringhoven. 4 vols.
Marburg, Germany: J. A. Stargardt, 1975-1976.
Vol. 1 & 2: Berichtigter und ergänzter Adruck
der 2. verbesserten Auflage von 1953 herausgegeben von Frank Baron
Freytag von Loringhoven [Corrected and Completed 2nd Edition,
Improving on the 1953 Edition Under the Direction of Frank Baron
Freytag von Loringhoven].
Vol. 3: Unveränderter Nachdruck der 3. Auflage [Unchanged
Reproduction of the 3rd Edition].
Vol. 4: Unveränderter Nachdruck der 2. Auflage von 1968
[Unchanged Reproduction of the 2nd Edition of 1968].
Third Series:
The third series started in 1978 [vol. 1 says 1980, but
the series started with vol. 6 in 1978, then vol. 7 in 1979, and vols.
8 and 1 in 1980 (Baumann 1998c)]. It is the current definitive
set and replaces the earlier versions. It is this series that
I discuss in detail in these notes.
Schwennicke, Detlev. Europäische

von Loringhoven. 16 vols. Marburg, Germany: Verlag von J. A.
Stargardt , 1978-1995.
Fourth Series:
Since October 1997, Verlag
Vittorio Klostermann of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, has taken over
the publication of a new revised and updated fourth series. Detlev
Schwennicke is the sole author. The title has been changed to
Europäische Stammtafeln: Neue Folge with vol. 17. The
first volume is now in the process of being published in several parts.
Vol. 1, part 1 is already available. Vol. 1, part 2 (and possibly
vol. 1, part 3), are forthcoming in 1999 and will include corrections
to vols. 1, part 1, and 17 (Baumann 1998a).
